The poem was written by a man named Hakurin who died in 1817 at age 68. Well, then, let’s follow the peal of bells to the yonder shore. I’d say Hakurin was taking his impending demise well enough.

A still, small place
Growing up in Gambier, I was anything but awed by — and only abstractly aware of — the august auspices of the Review, the offices they afforded writers I would grow to admire. (More on this, anon.) I was also anything but grown up — to wit, an adolescent infiltration (indeed, incursion) of a reading by a gracious group of Young Writers, at which I read a story by my younger brother, not yet old enough to be Young — which came home to me last week when a pal and I dropped in on the Offices o

Me Ra asked me a while back if she could post one of my poems. I’m not really a “writer”, but when I write or journal it tends to be more of a poem format than prose. Do the right thing for the environment
Do the right thing for the environment Posted on August 20, 2008 by Iain Hall I quote below from a most amusing piece by Craig Emerson published today in The OZ I suggest that it should be compulsory reading for every Latte Sippers because he enunciates very clearly the problem of following the Green Religion if you want to actually do the right thing for the environment. Recycling, we are told, is a good way to do our bit saving the environment. Anyone questioning the environmental benefit

Day of Poetry
Diane Lockward wrote about hosting a day of poetry at her home — isn’t her family room gorgeous with those big bookshelves? — and sharing prompts with the other writers. She writes that the day lasts from about 10 - 4. At the start, there’s plenty of gabbing and then they receive down to business, which involves spending 20 minutes creating in response to a prompt. After the 20 minutes, each person reads what they have. No critiques happen. The other writers offer appreciative ahhs and hmmms so as
